The Sun is in Aquarius

Astro Tip
January 19, 2014

The Sun is in Aquarius from January 19 through February 17.  This year Aquarians are challenged by Saturn’s transit through Scorpio.

The Sun is in Aquarius now.  Aquarius, the sign of the water bearer, is an air sign.  In ancient Egypt Aquarius was associated with the flooding of the Nile, the necessary water that brought life to the crops that sustained life.  The ancient world took the constellation Aquarius to another level of meaning.  They said it contained the spiritual nectar that nourishes life and provides immortality. So why is the water bearer identified with the element of air?

Aquarius, the Water Bearer, is an Air Sign.

Aquarius has two rulers, Saturn and Uranus.  Saturn was the ruler of both Capricorn and Aquarius until planet Uranus--name after Greek deity Ouranos,--was discovered in 1781 (the first planet to be discovered with the use of a telescope). The planet Saturn received its name from the Greek mythological deity, Chronos (later called Saturn).

According to Greek mythology, the first phase of evolution on Earth was ruled by Ouranos (later called Uranus) and Gaia/Mother Earth. This was the age of creation and experimentation.  The sky god, Uranus (a deity from the heavens, hence air) came down and created life with Mother Earth.  Uranus wanted everything to be perfect and killed his children or buried them in the underworld if they weren’t good enough!  Gaia put a stop to Uranus by outwitting him and his arrogant, violent way.  She managed to keep one child, Saturn, hidden and safe.  When Saturn grew up he killed his father.

Saturn ruled the second phase of evolution.  Now it was time to build on what had been created and establish solid life on Earth.  Saturn brought structure, durability, practicality, time and rules to live by.  He ruled until his own son, Zeus, managed to survive to adulthood and kill him.  Zeus took charge of the next evolutionary phase.

Skip ahead thousands and thousands of years. The Greek god, Ouranos (Uranus) was resurrected in 1781 when a planet was discovered with a telescope. Uranus became associated with science and technology. Now Aquarius becomes more than the water bearer in the Egyptian zodiac; and Uranus becomes more than the sky god who helped create life on earth with Gaia’s feminine body.  Uranus became associated with ENERGY and electricity.  Nowadays Uranus means the mystery of creative energy that is subtle—for example, quantum theory.  Uranus also rules the Angels and all messengers and messages from other vibratory realms that contribute to our awakening.  Uranus is the mentor of astrology and it has domain over mental creativity, the stars, the cosmos, and the universe.

How do Aquarius people handle all that cosmic energy?

So how do Aquarius individuals handle this electrical package?  For one thing, they need to be encouraged to work on inventions that help humanity.  Aquarians need to be free to explore other dimensions, like advanced science and metaphysics as well.  Their electrical nature makes them high strung, nervous and alert. They are sensitive to energies all around them and they are irritated when they brush up against incompatible energies.  We need to indulge the Aquarian’s need to be quirky. At the same time Aquarians needs to accommodate society and not think it’s ok to break a lot of rules, simple things like showing up on time for dinner!  Saturn put rules into the fabric of life. Aquarius challenges those rules and instigates revolt if rules become unreasonable or unjust.  Not every Aquarian will manifest extreme Uranian traits. Many Aquarians are more comfortable with Saturn as their guide.  It all depends on the individual horoscope.

This calendar year many Aquarians are challenged by planet Saturn (now transiting Scorpio).  Aquarius folks may be asked to practice patience, limit their freedom, or take on bigger responsibilities that restrict their “space out” time.  In spite of this, Aquarius people are still going to be the life of the party.  Aquarians like to be with groups of people. They are seeking kindred spirits who will join them in trying to make humanity a more perfect species.

Full Moon in Cancer, January 15, 2014

The new moon was January 1st in the sign of Capricorn and the full moon is in the sign of Cancer on Wednesday, January 15.  Capricorn and Cancer are attached by the quality of security.  For some people the energy of this month has challenged their sense of security--whether that security is connected to home (that would be Cancer) or connected to career and one’s place in community (Capricorn).  Earlier this month I heard from a client whose landlord suddenly announced the imminent sale of the condo she is living in.  She and her two dear cats face upheaval and loss of physical and emotional security.  There is a bundle of unpredictable energy.  For some, it’s emotional volatile situations.  For another it’s busy mind syndrome.  One person might have increased anxiety while another person might overdo it on the road rage!  Expect the unexpected!  As the full moon approaches we might tune in and take our “security temperature”! Given the constant bombardment of upheavals all around the planet, maybe the full moon is asking us to remember the serenity prayer….sometimes we need the courage to address the things that need to be changed;  sometimes we need the serenity to accept where we are powerless; and sometimes we need to trust our inner wisdom that we will know the difference between what we can change and what we can’t change.   Chant OM and stay peaceful if you can during the full moon in Cancer.

Astro Tip January 7, 2014

Astro Tip for Tuesday, January 7, 2014

The pressure cooker energy from January 1st is activated again when the Moon joins Uranus in Aries.  The moon has now moved 90 degrees from the new moon in Capricorn when a powerful period was initiated on January 1st.  As of Tuesday, Mercury and Venus are putting their heads together to figure out ways to be more organized and ways to create new avenues for income. Moon in Aries comes along and reinforces our commitment to resolutions and plans.  However, Uranus sitting with the Moon might interrupt what we thought was solid.  Moon/Uranus shouts across the court at Mars.  We are irritable and unsettled.  This will pass. The important thing to remember is the New Moon in January gives us a basketful of energy to initiate a new life course.  This could be in the form of generating new actions or changing our behavior in a major way.  It could be a shake-up in our belief system.  It could be events beyond our control that take us in a new direction.
